SLANT - Bhutan write-shop in Paro (11-13 May 2019)

The Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environmental Research (UWICER) and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has been implementing the project“Sloping lands in transition: Participatory research on landscape management for forest ecosystem service provision and adaptation-SLANTsupported by Government of Austria, since 2016.   As part of the final phase of the project, a write-shop is being conducted by UWICER and CIFOR at Paro to synthesize the results of the project and prepare materials for dissemination to policy makers, forestry professionals and the communities of the research sites. Another objective of the write-shop is to review the overall project experiences and to chalk out the activities for the second phase of the project. Dr. Himlal Baral, Senior Scientist at CIFOR, and Dr. Robin Sears, Consultant, are facilitating the three-day write-shop. After the workshop, the team of researchers will visit some of the field sites in Thimphu, Punakha and Trongsa to discuss research findings with the Local Forest Officers and other key stakeholders. Consultative Workshop to develop strategic plan for Black Necked Crane and White Bellied Heron

The Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environmental Research in collaboration with Royal Society for Protection of Nature is organizing a consultative workshop to develop strategic plan for the iconic avian species (Black necked cranes and White-bellied heron) on 11 and 12 April 2019.  The workshop brought in the Chief Forestry Officers, senior forest officials and senior officials from RSPN to the workshop.  These 35 officials from across the country representing various habitats of Black necked crane and White-bellied heron got together on one platform to collectively think for the conservation and welfare of the species.  The workshop saw presentations on the conservation status and issues from various habitats to assess the conservation status and issues to develop strategic plan for these species.  [Read More...]

UWICER joins partners in marking the Karuna Foundation Day in Bhutan

Partners from different organization met to mark the Karuna Foundation Day at hotel Le Meridien, Thimphu, on 1st April, 2019. The Karuna Foundation supports different Institutions and organizations within Bhutan to help mitigate carbon emission and adapt to climate change impacts. The day saw the participation from the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law, the Bhutan Ecological Society, the Global Tiger Center, the Bhutan Foundation and the UWICER. [Read More...]
