A report on “Aquatic Biodiversity Assessment - A baseline study in Mangdechhu, Central Bhutan”

Freshwater biodiversity is an important constituent of aquatic ecosystem as they play a central role in nutrient cycling and providing food source for higher trophic levels. Now freshwater are experiencing decline in biodiversity far greater than those in the terrestrial ecosystem through recurring anthropogenic activities, and hydropower is one of the impinging affects that not only alter terrestrial ecosystem but also the aquatic ecosystem. This report titled “Aquatic biodiversity Assessment A baseline study in Mangdechhu, Central Bhutan” by UWICER is an attempt to study the impact on aquatic biodiversity by hydropower construction. We suggest similar assessments for other hydropower plants may be useful to understand the state of aquatic ecosystem before and after the operation of hydropower plants.
