Other search engines

You need to keep in mind that Google is not the only search engine that exists, so if you cannot find what you are looking for, try a different search engine.

Try this site to help you decide which search engine will best serve your needs:

Phil Bradley's FindingInformation: Search Engines

The following are some of a few tips on searching, whichever search engine you decide to use:

  • Use the online Help offered within the individual search engines to refine your search.
  • To start with, become thoroughly familiar with one or two search engines, rather than trying dozens of them.
  • Make sure you understand which default the search engine uses, i.e. when you enter twoor more search terms whether it combines them using 'or' or 'and'.
  • Be as specific as possible to reduce the number of hits, i.e. amend your search by adding additional search terms or use a phrase search, generally in quote marks.
  • If you get too few results, check your spelling; consider using truncation or an 'or' search with alternative terms.
  • Generally the most relevant results are listed first. Don't scroll through all the pages of the results: if you can't find what you're looking for in the first few pages, try re-formulating your search terms.
  • Analyse the address (URL) of the resource before linking to it. Is it government information, i.e. gov., an educational resource i.e. ac. for UK sites or edu. for American sites, company information i.e. co.. or com ., or an organisation i.e. org.?

Can you guess thelikely address of an organisation ?

Ministry of Agriculture and Forests is one of the government's ministry,in Bhutan: its Web address is http://www. moaf.gov.bt/moaf/

The Centre for Bhutan Studies is an organisation, in Bhutan and its web address is http://www.bhutanstudies.org.bt

If you have to run the same search on a regular basis, you can save it for future re-use by saving it as a Favorite (Internet Explorer) or Bookmark (Mozilla Firefox)
