How to get the best out of Google

The following tips may help you to search Google effectively. You can use Help screens for further guidelines.

Try it yourself:

Google

The word "AND" is used as a default to broaden your search results, in a Basic search. So you do not require to write "and" between your keywords. In order to exclude similar search results, you need to use the word "NOT", which is symbolised by minus sign (-), and use "OR" in upper case for either of search terms(s).

  • Trees Flowers Plants
  • Flowers-Trees
  • Silviculture OR Trees OR Forest OR Plants
Put phrases into quotation marks:
"community forest and their impacts"
Google usually ignores common words and characters including single numbers. If it is essential that they are included in your search you need to puta plus sign in front; often a phrase search will do instead:
+the Forest OR "The Forest"
It doesn't use truncation, but it does have a feature whereby if you include an asterisk * within a phrase search. The search will be matched with any word in that position. For instance:
"community * practice"
"Flowers * Bhutan"
A Google search is not case sensitive; using either upper or lower case produces the same results:
Flowers OR flowers

The use of Google Advance Search may help you to limit your search further or search for comprehensive and appropriate results.
